Training activities

The doctoral student must carry out a series of training activities:

MANDATORY Training Activities

  • Initiation to Doctorate and Research (first year):

    • Scheduled in September-October of each academic year (taught by the Sub-Directorate of Research and Doctorate).
    • Can be validated with a similar activity taught by the EID.

  • Scientific Methodology and Documentation (first year):

    • This course lasts approximately 20 hours (taught by the Library Service of the ETSIAE).
    • It can be validated with the ICE course "Methodological and Documentation Bases for Scientific Research" in face-to-face or MOOC format and with other courses of similar characteristics organized by other institutions.
    • It can be validated if you have any scientific publication (article, conference proceedings, book chapter, or similar) during the first year of your PhD Thesis.

  • Annual Results Presentation Workshop

    • This activity has a total duration of approximately 8 hours.
    • The EID organizes an event every year.
    • Can be validated with the presentation of the Thesis work at conferences.
    • NEW: Presentation of Your PhD Thesis at ETSIAE

      • MANDATORY  It will be required for ALL PhD students who submit their thesis after September 30, 2025, and for those who were unable to participate in the Annual Results Presentation activity beforehand. Of course, those who will submit before September 30, 2025, are also welcome to participate.

Activity description: To showcase the research being done at ETSIAE, especially to undergraduate and master's students, all PhD students will need to record a video at least once during your PhD, for publication on the Doctorate Instagram channel: @doctoradoetsiae and the ETSIAE YouTube channel (in preparation). The video format is flexible; the only requirement is that the PhD student appeasr at the beginning introducing himself, and the file size must not exceed 4 GB. It is recommended that the video be no longer than three minutes and can be recorded in either Spanish or English. PhD students are welcome to submit more than one video during their PhD if they wish to share more details about their research.
When the PhD students submist the videos, they will also need to send the documents:  autorizacion_alojamiento_<wbr />externos and Present Your PhD Thesis at ETSIAE Form. Additionally, they should send a photo for the video cover, including the title of the PhD Thesis.  The videos and the required documentation must be sent to: subdirectora.id.aeroespacial@upm.es

    • NEW: PhD Thesis Presentation Workshop at ETSIAE

      • This event will be hybrid: presentations can be given in person or online. It is designed for students who have advanced in their PhD Thesis to showcase their research to students and faculty at ETSIAE. Presentations will last 10 minutes. This activity is not mandatory but is highly recommended, and it can count as your Annual Results Presentation. More information will be provided in due course.

  • Research seminars:

    • The total duration of this activity must be between 15 and 20 hours.
    • This activity consists of attending Conferences, Seminars, Courses, and Doctoral Thesis readings (request a certificate of attendance for recognition and send it to subdireccion.id.aeroespacial@upm.es). In the case of attending theses at the ETSIAE, you must send a justification (download the template here),, which must be signed by the Secretary of the Tribunal once the event is over, along with a summary of the thesis of about 15-20 lines.

  • Taller de seguimiento de doctores egresados

The CAPD may evaluate previously accredited training activities documented and validate them while maintaining a file for the student with such supporting documents (CD UPM- 28/03/2017).

Each student must keep track of the activities they carry out in the following document, which will be submitted along with all the justifications for completing the Training Activities of the Doctorate Program in Aerospace Engineering when requested by the CAPD.
